Slovak Heritage Society of Northeastern PA
The Slovak Heritage Society of Northeastern Pennsylvania was formally organized in November 1983 at Sacred Heart Slovak School in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Slovak classes are conducted twice a year, cooking classes have been held annually, along with classes for Pysanky, Choral Workshop, Cross Stitch Embroidery, AARP 55 Alive Mature Driving, Slovak Dancing and Workshop. Slovak Catholic Federation
The Slovak Catholic Federation was founded by the Reverend Joseph Murgaš, Pastor of Sacred Heart Slovak Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, on Feb 22, 1911. Its establishment resulted from a meeting of two bishops representing the Dioceses of Scranton, Pennsylvania and Cleveland, Ohio, 36 priests, and approximately 200 lay people, wishing to unify Slovak Catholics in the United States. The Zdruenie Slovenskych Katolifov, as it is known in Slovak, became incorporated in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on December 30, 1912. The American Fraternal Alliance has a rich history dating back to 1886. For more than 120 years, the American Fraternal Alliance has provided its member-societies an opportunity to connect with each other and focus on issues of mutual concern. Together, member-societies successfully have helped add “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance and have named the founding location of National Flag Day a national shrine. Western Pennsylvania Slovak Cultural Association
On March 17, 1997, Slovak Honorary Consul Joseph Senko formed a non-profit organization, Western Pennsylvania Slovak Cultural Association (WPSCA). It was formed to bring diverse authentic Slovak cultural programs to Western Pennsylvania for not only Slovak-Americans, but for the entire public to enjoy. The mission of WPSCA is to offer a variety of Slovak cultural and historic programs including some directly from Slovakia so that the attendees could appreciate the rich cultural talent which is available in the Slovak Republic; secondly, the programs are marketed and made available to all Slovak-Americans in the area, regardless of which Slovak society they are members, as well as the general public.
